JL Heavy Industries shares a real-world solution from our structural steel processing site, where a fragmented manual process was successfully integrated into a single, AI-driven workflow.

The Invisible Bottleneck: Multi-Step Manual Modeling and Data Conversion

In shipbuilding and heavy industries, processing massive volumes of structural steel profiles—such as H-Beams, Angles, and Bulb Flats—is a daily necessity. While cutting and processing machinery has advanced rapidly, the process of feeding precise actionable instructions into these machines remained surprisingly manual.

Until now, converting a client's 2D drawing into machine-executable control code required a time-consuming multi-step process that demanded significant expertise:

  • Manual 3D Re-modeling: Recreating structural shape data in 3D space based on 2D engineering drawings.
  • Feature & Cutting Path Definition: Manually inputting bevel angles, cut-off values, cutting paths, and structural geometries item by item.
  • Nesting & Code Export: Performing nesting operations for material efficiency, then manually exporting individual files into machine-readable formats (e.g., NC code).

This fragmented workflow was not only a major operational bottleneck, but it also introduced constant human error depending on operator skill level, leading to shop-floor delays, costly rework, and material waste.

Introducing JL Automation Tool: AI-Powered Recognition & Unified Pipeline

To break this bottleneck, we developed the JL Automation Tool. Rather than forcing operators to act as human translators drawing lines manually between blueprints and machines, we built an AI engine capable of understanding structural drawings directly.

JL Automation Tool skips tedious and repetitive manual modeling stages. Simply loading a 2D structural drawing into the software allows our proprietary AI recognition engine to identify key geometries, calculate bevel angles and cutting contours automatically, and generate a primary Cutting Plan (CP) file complete with H-Beam nesting in a single step.

Operators only need to perform a quick final verification to ensure the AI-generated primary file matches the drawing, then convert it into the final machine control format. The complex preparation process—once requiring manual line drawing and profile creation—is now fully automated.

Proven on Our Own Shop Floor

We did not build this software in a lab; we developed and validated it to solve real operational bottlenecks inside our own manufacturing facility.

By replacing fragmented manual processes with a unified AI pipeline, we achieved:

  • Drastic Time Savings: File preparation and modeling time dropped from several hours to mere seconds.
  • Zero Manual Translation Errors: Eliminating manual data entry and line drawing drastically reduced human error, shop-floor rework, and material waste.
  • Seamless Scalability: Operators can now transition from receiving drawings to actual machine cutting without delays.

Building the Foundation for the Future of Manufacturing

The core technology behind JL Automation Tool reflects JL Heavy Industries' ongoing commitment to digitizing shop-floor expertise into scalable software.

At JL Heavy Industries, we believe true smart manufacturing begins by solving actual bottlenecks where hardware and data meet. We utilize JL Automation Tool in our daily shop-floor operations, and we are currently preparing to provide both our proprietary software solutions and automated processing equipment to the broader industry.

Stay tuned as we continue to redefine manufacturing by integrating hardware, software, and operational data.
